How do you know when it’s time to move your parents or grandparents into assisted living? This is a decision many families struggle with. It’s a big decision – you want your senior family members happy and safe. I understand the dilemma, our family struggled with this when it was time to move my 90-year-old mother-in-law out of her condo and into assisted living.

There are several signs that you’ll want to pay attention to.

  • Are they isolated? Isolation can lead to depression and an overall decline in health.  Assisted living facilities provide a community for seniors.  One thing I often hear from families and our elder sellers is that they wish they had moved sooner. The social aspect can't be stressed enough.
  • Are they taking their medication? As seniors age they are more likely to develop chronic health issues. Are they taking the correct medications at the proper dose and time? This was the main issue for my mother-in-law.
  • Are they eating and taking care of themselves? If they are not maintaining basic self care this will lead to continued health decline.
  • Are they able to manage their finances? Are you starting to see increasing numbers of bills not getting paid? I think most of us also fear that our senior family members will be susceptible to scammers.

Many seniors would prefer to continue living in their own homes and age in place. Sometimes circumstances make that option too dangerous. You'll want to make sure close family members are aligned. This can be a very sensitive topic to bring up. I hope this video helped! Think of us as a resource for all things real estate and downsizing.
